In 2017 I wrote a MA thesis arguing that empathy would become the most valuable skill at work.
The ideas held up. My writing? Not so much. 😅
This week I dug out my MA thesis from Hyper Island: "Empathic Culture & Self-Leading Teams". It's packed with research, interviews and references I'm still proud of. It's also very long, and in places reads like I wrote it at 2am. (I probably did.)
So I sat down with Claude to give it a second life:
✏️ Turned 12 sprawling pages into one readable blog post
🧹 Fixed my dodgy writing (sorry, 2017 me)
📊 Redrew the key models, from Cynefin to Laloux's Teal stages
🤖 Added a 2026 update to every section: what each idea means for leadership in the AI era
The surprising bit? Psychological safety, distributed authority, emotional intelligence as the "new currency of work"... AI hasn't made any of these less important. It's made them unavoidable.
One line from the update sums it up: AI brings force without direction. The leader's job is to supply the good.
Have a read and tell me what I got wrong 👇
